Robert Ballou went back to victory lane with the USAC Sprint Car Series on Wednesday, putting another exclamation point on an incredibly consistent season.
Since a 12th-place finish in the season opener, Ballou has rattled off 13 straight top-10 finishes. He was only outside of the top 10 once.
It’s something that is remarkable for the man that is crew chiefing his own car. He attributes it to a chassis switch over the off-season.
“We switched to these Beijing Bullet Triple X Chassis. We changed back for our winged program and that’s ultimately what decided to switch it back for the non-wing deal as well. I have two cars now and they’re unbelieveable.”
Ballou’s streak of top 10 finishes has kept him hanging right with the top drivers in the standings.
He’s currently in fourth holding a lead over USAC veteran Chris Windom.
“I just had to get a balance. It’s like a really fine line. I’m so fat that it really screws up the balance of the race car. I’m either laid over because I’m too fat or I’m stood up and spinning. I’m probably the biggest pain in the ass driver. As of now, I’m the crew chief so I can only be mad at myself.”
The win also puts Ballou into the top spot of the USAC Eastern Storm points standings, as part of the tour’s five-race mini series.
Him and others will get another shot at things on Thursday as the tour heads to Selinsgrove for Night 3 of the Eastern Storm.
