Brandon Sheppard needed just one more win to tie Josh Richards for the all-time lead in World of Outlaws Late Model Series wins coming into Friday night’s feature at Charlotte.
Unfortunately for the already-clinched 2021 World of Outlaws Late Model champion, he’ll have to wait another day.
Jonathan Davenport made a pass on Sheppard’s Rocket No. 1 car to take home the win in Night 1 of the finale weekend for the World of Outlaws Late Model series.
“(The car) was really good,” Davenport said on DirtVision. “I knew I thought I was a little bit better than Brandon (Sheppard) when he was behind the No. 7 car. I could run a lane lower (and get faster).”
Davenport’s win is his second with the series in 2021 in the nine starts he has made on the year.
“It’s great to come here and run the wheels off in front of this awesome crowd,” Davenport said. “This is a great facility.”
Sheppard on the other hand ends up a spot short of his goal of tying Richards before the end of his fourth championship season.
He’ll have one more chance to do it on Saturday.
“Once the track got cleaned up there at the end, we definitely got tight,” Sheppard told DirtVision. “The guys were working hard on this car all night and gave me a good one. We had a good car for most of the race there. We definitely have something to work on tomorrow. Hopefully we can be one spot better.”
Night 2 of the NGK NTK World Finals was moved up and will officially begin at Noon CT. Fans unable to make it to Charlotte can watch the event on DirtVision.
