After confirming the rumors this past week that he intends to compete in NASCAR next year, Shane Van Gisbergen announced that he will be making his NASCAR oval debut in the Craftsman Truck Series at Indianapolis Raceway Park on August 11th.
Van Gisbergen will drive the No. 41 for Niece Motorsports at the 0.686-mile asphalt oval, located just a few miles west of Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He is set to compete in the NASCAR Cup Series on August 13th for their event on the road course.
Just last month, Van Gisbergen made his NASCAR debut at the Chicago Street Race, where he became the first driver to win their debut since 1963 (Johnny Rutherford).
“I’ve seen the trucks race on television and know it’s very competitive and that I’ll have a lot to learn on a short track,” said Van Gisbergen. “The weekend will certainly be a challenge and I’m thrilled at getting a chance to climb in a truck.”
The three-time Supercars champion has not said exactly which team he will be racing for in NASCAR in 2024, or exactly which of the series he will be competing in, but remains confident that is the plan.
“We are so excited and honored to have Shane drive for us at IRP,” said Niece Motorsports General Manager Cody Efaw. “We will help him experience oval racing and I am guessing we will learn a lot from him as well.”
You can watch the “TSport 200” from Indianapolis Raceway Park on FS1. The race begins at 9 pm EST. The race marks the beginning of the playoffs “Round of 10” for the series.
