Bobby Pierce found himself in second from the get go during Wednesday night’s Hell Tour race at Peoria Speedway to Ryan Unzicker.
For 30 laps, he went inside, outside and through the middle – trying every which way to get around Unzicker for the lead.
When it finally happened it was after two failed slide jobs and a misstep on Unzicker’s part.
“He left the door open there. I hope I raced him clean there. I gave him a love tap and let him know I was there a little bit. What a fun race, this place always provides great racing. Tonight the track was phenomenal. We could race just about anywhere and make moves.”
Nonetheless, though, Pierce drove away as a back-to-back Hell Tour winner to kick off the 2021 edition of the tour.
The win was his 29th of his career and spurred from his move to get by Unzicker with less than 10 laps remaining.
“My dad kind of gave me the idea. He showed me with the sticks there to possibly try it out (running around the top). I wasn’t going to ride in second, that’s for sure. I was going to end up trying it. Anytime I got some momentum built up on the top, he would kind of move up to the middle and block a little bit. Luckily it stayed green the whole time and we could pull it off.”
Pierce would end up driving away from Unzicker, after the No. 24’s tires ended up going away at a fast rate.
The series will leave Peoria to head to Kankakee County Speedway following the night in Peoria, all of the drivers heading out without a win – except for the No. 32 team headed by Pierce.
“I’m no Brandon Overton, but two-for-two so far is pretty good. Hopefully we keep it rolling.”
