Brad Sweet held the lead for Saturday’s World of Outlaws Black Ice Brawl throughout the back half of the A-Main at Magnolia Motor Speedway, but David Gravel was showing a strong charge getting up to second from P10.
The four-time and defending series champion in Sweet took advantage of a pair of cautions late, that set him up with a single-file restart and a clean track in front of him to earn the trip to victory lane.
“We’re clicking well, we’re making great adjustments,” Sweet said on the DirtVision broadcast. “I wasn’t sure how good I was there. I kind of had my hands full at times in lapped traffic… We want to get some momentum going early in the year.”
The win is Sweet’s 80th career World of Outlaws victory, and he becomes the fourth fastest person to reach that marrk.
Steve Kinser reached 80 wins in 208 starts, Sammy Swindell did it in 273 and Doug Wolfgang had it in 403.
Saturday marked Sweet’s 804th start.
“Any time you get your name mentioned with those guys, the legends of the sport, it’s pretty cool,” Sweet said on the broadcast. “Yeah, 80 wins – it’s just not possible without my guys at Kasey Kahne Racing.”
Gravel currently sits at 79 career wins and has raced in 761 starts with the tour.
The series will return to the track next weekend for the Federated Auto Parts Texas Outlaw Nationals at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, set for a Friday-Saturday doubleheader race weekend.
