It took staying committed to the cushion and holding off some of the best drivers the USAC Midget tour has to offer on Wednesday night, but Corey Day pulled it off.
The 15-and-a-half year old driver became the youngest winner in USAC National Midget tour history at Circle City after winning the Indiana Midget Week feature event during the night.
“There’s no words to describe it,” Day said on the FloRacing broadcast. “I’m tired. That’s about all I’ve got right now. I’m speechless.”
Day started on the pole of the feature and claimed the top line right away in the race.
Kevin Thomas Jr. was forced to commit to running around the low line and made the most of it, finishing second on the night.
Although, Day’s most impressive stint on the night came on a restart where he was passed by Emerson Axsom in the first pair of corners before getting his lap back on the other side.
“Emerson and I raced micros forever so I knew he was going to race me clean and I was going to race him clean back,” Day said on the FloRacing broadcast. “I can’t thank (everyone) that gave me this opportunity. It’s awesome.”
In the end, it worked out for Day, never surrendering the lead again and holding off the field on a two-lap shootout to win the night.
