A month ago, racing fans watched a female athlete driver her way into the main event of the Chili Bowl Nationals. On Saturday, though, they saw a 15-year old phenom compete for a win.
Jade Avedisian led the USAC Midget race at the halfway mark during the tour’s season opening weekend in Ocala, Fla. where she earned her best career finish and first podium thus far.
A red-hot Justin Grant beat out the youngster on Saturday night, but Avedisian proved that she belonged in the field. Grant recognized that so much that before taking to the stage for his post-race interview, he jogged to shake Avedisian’s hand.
With the result, Avedisian becomes one of half a dozen women who have recorded top 5 finishes with the series.
No woman has ever won a USAC Midget race, but with her and a stout group of female athletes in the field, it’s safe to say that that barrier will be broken in the near future.
