Justin Grant was poised in the lead position for most of the Indiana Sprint Week opener on Friday at Gas City I-69 Speedway.
He had led every lap of the A-Main until Robert Ballou showed his nose and eventually got his nose in front of the No. 4 car, but Grant prevailed at the finish line, winning by 0.005 seconds in one of the closest finishes in USAC history.
“It was 29 laps of just riding around and then ‘oh boy, let’s get to racing here,'” Grant said on FloRacing.
Grant was waiting for someone to approach, as any dirt driver does while continuing to navigate lapped traffic.
“Right as we were starting to catch the big patch of lappers, I was starting to hear somebody,” Grant said on FloRacing. “I could just hear somebody back there running more throttle… and then a couple of guys got tangled there in 1 and 2 and I didn’t hear anybody and didn’t hear anybody – and Robert must have moved his line or slowed his space.”
In the end, it was Grant coming out on top, in the first night of many on the Indiana Sprint Week slate. All of the action on Saturday can be seen live, as always, on FloRacing.
