There weren’t many in the stands that believed Logan Schuchart could put enough together with three laps to go in Friday’s Morgan Cup preliminary night at Williams Grove, as Brad Sweet had led each of the A-Main’s laps leading up to the final moments.
That’s been true over the past few weeks for the little team that could turned million dollar winners, but once again, they made it happen, as Schuchart piloted his race car around the high line to beat a limping No. 49 to the finish line.
Sweet got into the cushion during the final laps, causing a chunk of mud to fill the wheel after his cover came off.
Meanwhile, Sweet was trying something different.
“I just glanced up at like lap 20, and I just thought, ‘I’m going to move the wing back and we’re going to try and move around the race track and see if we can find anything,” Schuchart said on the DirtVision broadcast. “I was able to get past Kasey (Kahne) and just started slowly moving in on Brad (Sweet).”
Sweet’s car started vibrating around the time he took the white flag, and from there, he was just trying to keep it straight.
Schuchart knew that an issue was causing Sweet to slow things down, and timed out his move perfectly to take the checkered flag in his home state.
“I knew he was probably going to try and be conservative there and block the bottom,” Schuchart said on the DirtVision broadcast. “It felt like kind of a replay from Cedar Lake the other week. When he moved down, I just thought I was going to try and run the top and keep the car as loose as possible.”
The series returns to the track Saturday for night 2, with all of the action set to take place on DirtVision.com.
“We’ve had an awesome couple weeks, but this one hits close to my heart,” Schuchart said.
