As the USAC National Midgets looked to roll off for the second feature of Indiana Midget Week, there was no telling what was going to happen between Chris Windom and Buddy Kofoid.
The defending series champion and the current series points leader were starting right next to one another in the lineup, determined to put on a show.
The night ended with Kofoid picking up his first career Indiana Midget Week win.
“This is badass,” Kofoid said in victory lane. “To win a Midget Week show is probably one of the bigger midget wins in my career… just to beat some of the best, straight up, head-to-head.”
Kofoid went to slide Windom – actually attempting to make the pass multiple times, but Windom slammed the door on him through the turn 3 entry.
The veteran was showing the up-and-coming young star the type of defensive driving that it takes to win a championship on the USAC tour.
However, Kofoid got it figured out, putting enough space between him and Windom out of turn 2 just after the midway point of the race.
“I had a blast racing with Chris (Windom), man,” Kofoid said on the FloRacing broadcast. “That was so much fun. If you guys didn’t like that, I don’t know what to tell you. That was hard racing, back-and-forth, that was a lot of fun.”
The win for Kofoid is his third USAC Midget victory of the season after wins earlier this year at Ocala and Port City, extending an exclamation point on an already exciting Indiana Midget Week ’21.
After all, on Thursday we saw Thomas Meseraull come from the B-Main to win the IMW opener.
The field will be back at it on Friday for night 3 as it heads to Lawrenceburg for another edition of wheel-to-wheel action. As always, it can all be streamed live on FloRacing.
