It took over a 15-hour delay, but Buddy Kofoid battled through a rain delay and myriad of restarts to hold off the field and lead all 30 laps in 2021’s USAC Midget Series opener at Bubba Raceway Park.
The youngster continued his hot start to the season that saw him earn a pair of wins in a winged sprint car in Arizona in January, and is off to a good run in his sophomore season on the tour.
As the defending rookie of the year and headliner for Keith Kunz Motorsports, it was important for Kofoid to perform early on, but he has blown through the races he’s ran so far this season and now has his third race win of the season overall.
Kofoid had to battle a little bit, though.
Tanner Thorson was right on his heels as he was being chased and fought by defending champion Chris Windom.
Windom’s pressure on Thorson took the threat away from Kofoid for a brief minute, but Thorson would go back for a final run for the win in the closing laps.
Kofoid held him off.
Daison Pursley was able to salvage a fourth-place finish after having his door shut on him by Windom and Emerson Axsom started out his season with a top five.
After the race, rain started accumulating on the race track and USAC officials were left with no choice but to postpone Saturday’s scheduled action.
Officials re-scheduled the racing for Monday night and are scheduled to begin the action at 5:00 p.m. CT.
The re-scheduled program will be completely new, according to the series, and they will re-run qualifying on Monday night. As always, all of the action can be seen and streamed live on FloRacing.
